Recent issues on MvM Dedicated

Post by Tasiin »

I am aware of the fact that there definitely has been an increase of lag on the server recently, and after some examination the problem appears to be a very slow router on the route between certain ISPs and my own. This means that not everyone will be affected, but to those who are there is very little I can do at the moment except hope that Comcast fixes the problem within a reasonable amount of time.

If you are affected and are interested in helping me work out the problem, what you can do right now is run a "tracert" to the server when you notice lag, and post the results in this thread. To do so:

1. Click on Start, then run, and type in cmd.

2. At the prompt, type in "tracert 68.49.145.126" without quotes, and it should bring up something that looks somewhat like this:

Image

(note that this is a sample image that I picked up from Google, and it may look slightly different for you)

3. Right click on an empty space inside cmd, select "Mark" from the menu, and drag a selection around the text, then hit enter.

4. Paste the results into this thread and I'll take a look at it. It would also help if you could tell me exactly what time it was when you started experiencing lag, and how many players were on the server at the time.

Regardless of whether or not Comcast fixes the problem, I suppose this is also a good time to announce that the server will be moving to a fiber-optic line provided by Verizon (FIOS) within the next few months (hopefully). The new connection will be more than twice as fast as what the server is currently on, with download speeds of 15MB and upload speeds of 2MB, compared to downloads of 6MB and uploads of 768K on the current connection. I'm not entirely sure how much of a difference this will make for the server as it's not really straining my bandwidth as it is, but it will obviously fix this problem.

Thanks for your patience. Please remember that while there is very little that I can do right now to fix the problem, if I can get some solid evidence that there is something wrong with Comcast's network, I may be able to bring it to their attention.

I should also note that in addition to not being helpfull, constant and mindless complaining about the server lagging for you is not appreciated.
Keep in mind that people go through a lot of trouble to keep the server open for YOU. Keep in mind that these people are NOT payed for their services in any way shape or form. They are normal people and mindless bitching serves only to irratate them. And yes, they do have a breaking point.

Below are some examples of what won't get you on the good side of the people who bust their asses trying to provide you with a good server:

"dedi = lag machine"
"it lags for everyone"
"everything lags on the dedi.."

Long story short, if it lags so much that you have to bring it up as a regular topic at the coffee table, feel free to shut the fu** up and host your own fu**ing server.

So far, pretty much all of the regular players have been understanding and haven't raised much of a stink. For this we sincerely thank you - we want to supply the best playing environment we can, and when problems pop up that are beyond our ability to correct we can get a bit edgy. So far it seems only Vincent/Darkruler has felt the need to bring the topic up on a regular basis in the lobby. While we know that we cannot hope to please the entire player base (as I'm sure Malix and Az can attest to) it is nonetheless quite irritating when otherwise level headed people resort to such nitpicking.

Anyway thanks in advance to (most) everyone for being understanding of our situation, and not going out of your way to irritate us.

A: It's true, and when people ask me to play there, I refuse, and giving lag for a reason

B: When a lot of people join and start to lag, I make a comment about it, then leave.

I am merely stating some reasons for my lack of willingness to play on the dedicated.

Besides, I know I tend to nag a lot, but never without reason.

ok ok, I know rly has to make sacrifices just for our pleasure, I greatly admire his commitment to the game and it's players, not to mention his inhuman skills

I will try to shut up as much as possible, though my lack of patience can easily get the best of me. So next time you hear me complaining about lag in the dedi, don't mind to tell me of what an ungrateful nagging bitch I am.

I'm sure neither of us will.

You also have to remember that distance plays a larger factor in determining ping than the bandwidth of either the client or the server, and nothing either of us could do would gaurantee a completely smooth experience for European players on a US based server. I could be paying $5000 a month for a full DS-4 with 274 Mbps of upload bandwidth and I doubt your ping would change at all. On the other end of the spectrum, I'm sure a player connecting to the server from within my state or at least near here with a solid 33.6 Kbps connection with a good ISP would get significantly better pings. There's just really nothing I can do about that, even without Comcast's recent bungling.

Looks fine on both of those. Affected connections only seem to have a very high ping to the last hop (pcp742456pcs.reston01.va.comcast.net). Thanks, though, it does help.
