Grr... had to pick bookmarks on topics to enter the boards... lame bastards. But how the heck could they hack this site... is phpBB that insecure or is the problem elsewhere?

I'm fairly certain its a phpBB prob. A few friends of mine had their sites hacked in similar ways, but it stopped after they updated phpBB. I believe a 'critical update' for phpBB was issued fairly recently.

http://giantswd.com/forums will take you to the forums.

As for the security of PhpBB, an upgrade will be rained down by the gods this weekend. Although not a major issue (as they're only replacing the index file), I'm sure more damage could be done if they researched this exploit. My apologies for the repeated defacement of the site.

Yeah.

As zop said to me, I think they're just hitting random sites who haven't upgraded yet.

They are. Several other sites that I visit that use phpBB have also been hacked recently. It's definitely something wrong with older versions of phpBB, and it will hopefully be sorted out when King upgrades the boards.

To be precise: I didn't have bookmarks, just some "New private message" emails lying around with a working URL in them. It was not easy to find the correct boards as the overview page was shut down.

@King: Are you sure that lamer didn't put some exploits into other pages that seem to be unaffected so far?

Not sure on it, but the variety of defacement groups makes me think they are using a hit and run tactic to attack sites. By looking at exactly they accomplish with the hack, they can overwrite the index file of possibly any direction with their own file. I have not seen any other files modified as of yet, but I will keep my eyes open.

I think the problem might be the upload script, I e-mailed you (King) about it.
I can't be sure this is the problem though.
(This problem should be fixed, for it should be equally hard to really do harm to the site, than to just hack the index (you might also want to make sure there's a backup of the site, maybe of the forum too)).
