Domain Business

Post by King »

After extensively evaluating options for GiantsWD, here's the current situation:

1) The domain, GiantsWD.com, will not be available due to ownership issues for at least 2 months.
2) Many sites currently link to GiantsWD.com (just Google 'giantswd') and may replace their links within this two month window.
3) I'm currently considering purchasing a different domain name than giantswd.com, including:

giantswd.org, giantswd.net or somethingelse.com

Given the situation, what do you feel is best for GiantsWD? Should we wait the 2 months for the domain name to become available or go ahead and associate with a completely new one? Please justify your answer.

I think it would be best to wait, use a free redirection page for now? (I believe zop knows of one, I don't...)

Lots of new players go to giantswd.com simply because they see "GiantsWD.com Dedicated" in the server list. "http://s88894241.onlinehome.us Dedicated" isn't quite as impressive. Simple solution, right? Get another domain, like GiantsWD.net
That also brings up another problem. I've had a lot of people asking me if I knew why the giantswd site was down, I had to direct them to the correct url. They didn't think to google it, and perhaps those who don't visit very often or old players looking to start playing again wouldn't either. They might end up thinking giantswd is gone, possibly losing players... although they might go in GSA to see if anyone's there too, I guess.

dunno

You can get .tk domains for free, but they place an ad thinger on the pages the direct to.... I think you could also use no-ip.org, which doesn't have ads if I remember correctly.

Is it guaranteed that no one takes it before you do?

No guarantee that a 3rd party won't snatch it up. However, this isn't a business and I would not be willing to pay extra from the 3rd party.

Try going to www.giantshell.com - Instead of our beloved giants hell, you get a generic page with nothing to do with Giants. Now try going to Tam's old site - www.tam79.com, again nothing to do with Giants. What happened? They decided to stop renewing their domain registration(s) which allowed other, less than friendly people to obtain them.

Why would they do this? Take another look at www.giantshell.com, specifically at the upper right hand corner: "Inquire about this domain." clicking this link brings you to a page in which you are given the option of bidding for ownership of the domain. In addition, clicking any of the categories on the main page will bring you to a new page with what I'm guesing to be sponsored links.

It is very possible that the same thing could happen to GiantsWD.com, should the domain become open again.

I see. Well, I just thought giantswd wasn't important enough to be worth hijacking, really.

www.b-one.net have sites really cheap..
currently im only using 500mb and I pay alittle over 300 SEK for that (once a year). I think a currency site told me 300 is around 37 dollars..
You can also choose 1gb and 2gb for size but I dont know how the price will change and how much it will be. 37 dollars once a year shouldnt be a problem.. and 1gb seem to have alittle over the double price of that..

The same thing happened to www.PlanetCitizenKabuto.com ; after release domain grabbers obtained that domain (probably due to the term "citizen").

Well, as you can see now, fortunately that site did not yield any revenue for them so the domain is available again.

I don't get logged in automatically when accessing GWD through giantswd.org, while it works fine when accessing it through www.giantswd.com or http://s88894241.onlinehome.us/

Anybody else experiencing this problem?
