Pretty much.
I had an SiS built-in soundcard in my previous PC, which caused Giants to crash and burn each time I had the nerve to play it outside of safemode.
I managed to fix the problem simply by updating drivers, though.

I've never had any issues with onboard audio in any game. Just try it, you might run into problems, or you might not.

I never had problems using my onboard sound either, but the quality was not as good as using an after market card.

Soundcards aren't that expensive at any rate, and I'd say a 7 year old game is one the last things to worry about.
