Giants : Random Crashes

Post by splatshot »

I'm having some stability issues with giants, v 1.4. It'll start up with no problems, the menu screen will come up and everything, but when I load a level, the game seems to crash at random. Most of the time, it'll crash right after the level loads, but occasionally it'll go for a few minutes or more without crashing. The game used to work fine on my computer when I was using a 1900xt (was able to finish the game), but once I upgraded to an 8800gtx, it started to give me problems. I've tried a few things so far, like reinstalling the game and running at stock speeds, but that didn't seem to help. I tried to download the GF3 patch from ftp://dedicated.no-ip.org/gf3.zip but I get the error message "550 CWD Failed. No Permission"
Any thoughts on what else I could try?

Sorry. I clean my FTP periodically, and I always forget to leave it there. I've put the file back, but I'd suggest using this more permanent link in the future: http://s149432842.onlinehome.us/gf3.zip

Are you getting the generic "This program has encountered a problem and needs to close" message when the game crashes? If so, if you could click more info on that screen and write down the offset/module name that it lists, I may be able to help you out.

I hope it's not a compatibility problem with the 8800s, as I was planning on upgrading to an 8800 GTS fairly soon myself.

Thanks Tasiin, looks like all I needed were the gf3 files. I played through about half the mecc campaign with only one crash. Even on my 1900xt, giants would crash every once and a while, so for me that was no big deal. I did notice some texture flickering in the early areas of mission 1 parts 1 and 3 that I don't remember seeing on my old video card. It was pretty distracting, but since it occured consistently in the same locations and didn't seem to be present in the later levels, I don't think it's that big an issue.

Also, for reference purposes:

Crashes w/o gf3.zip files:

module: giants.exe
offset: 0003209a

(checked twice, it was the same each time)

Isolated Crash on m3 part5 w/ gf3.zip files:

module: giants.exe
offset: 0013da29

Interesting. I can't say exactly what caused it on either of those, but I can say that the first crash (without the GF3 files) was related to the landscape renderer. The second one was a common multiplication function, and I don't really know what could've caused that.

I've heard the 8800 series has problems with older games, so it wouldn't surprise me terribly if that was the cause of the problems. The fact that Giants was crashing with your X1900XT makes me think it could be related to something else as well, though. Crashes are extremely rare with 1.4 patched Giants.

As for the texture flickering, that could've just been due to a bug with tree/other object shadows that causes them to flicker if there's a whole bunch of them stacked on top of each other.

Hey I have been playing single player and I reached the base build part however it keeps crashing when my base is around half the way done (~20-30min).
My system has Windows 7 64bit (7201), cpu C2D E8400, 4GB RAM, GeForce 260.

These are the error logs from my event viewer for each of the three times it crashed:

The crashes reported in those logs are a known issue with single player in beta 1.496 and will be resolved in the next update.
